Tamworth's Chris Wreh refused to play in their midweek game due to the club's reaction to racist abuse he received online. Wreh was a second-half substitute in Tamworth's FA Cup third-round defeat to Tottenham, where they lost 3-0. After the match, Wreh posted a screenshot of an Instagram message containing racist language, which was sent by someone who lost a bet on the game. Chris Wreh stated he was disappointed by the lack of public support from the club, despite receiving support from manager Andy Peaks and fans. The 28-year-old striker claimed only one club official contacted him, saying the club wanted to keep the matter internal. As a result, Wreh declined to play in Tamworth's Birmingham Senior Cup match against Boldmere St Michaels. Tamworth later released a statement saying they were assisting police and would continue to support Wreh. The club emphasized that racist abuse would never be tolerated and would be thoroughly investigated. Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out commended Wreh's decision, saying it was selfless and highlighted the need for clubs to take discrimination seriously. Wreh joined Tamworth in 2023 and has also played for Hartlepool United, Southend United, and Banbury United. Since the FA Cup tie, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou criticized a section of the Tamworth support for abuse aimed at him during the match. The incident has sparked a debate on racism in football and the need for clubs to provide adequate support to players who experience abuse.
